Pono Consulting Group

PONO Consulting Group was founded in 2012 by Jonathan Shick.  After years of being involved in both construction and consulting services in the structural, renewable energy, and building envelope industries, Jonathan saw a need to bridge the gap between the client's needs, design and engineering, and exceptional construction practices that he found missing from his role in either the contracting or consulting field.  PONO Consulting Group's Mission is to establish a unique relationship between the client, the designer and the contractor. By focusing on blending construction and engineering expertise from the outset of every project PONO delivers the highest quality solution at the best value for the client.  PONO's consulting expertise can assist the client in bringing dreams to design, selecting and engaging qualified contractors, monitoring construction progress, ensuring quality at all phases, and finalizing the finished project.

On BEING 'PONO'

In Hawaiian thought, being 'pono' means being in perfect alignment and balance with all things in life. It means that one has the perfect relationship with the creative energy of the universe, however one describes that energy. 'Pono' means that one is in complete harmony and alignment with one's custodial relationship with the earth.  It means that one has a proper respectful relationship with all family members and co-workers.  One's relationships with others are just and fair and not tinged by anger, jealousy, resentment or any negative energy. One is in harmony and integrity. Discord is resolved with ho'oponopono – the setting right of bad feelings. At the end of the process all parties feel the matter is resolved and no longer exerts any negative energy on the parties involved.  All are 'pono' with one another again.

PONO Consulting Group is so named to reflect on the meaning of being 'pono':  Respect, integrity and complete harmony of relationships is the mantra.  As projects are developed we at PONO Consulting Group aspire to be 'pono' to all: to be a 'pono' guardian of the earth's resources, a 'pono' friend, co-worker, employer, government servant and 'pono' decision making.

JONATHAN SHICK
FOUNDER AND PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT

Jonathan graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.  Following completion of college, he went to work for a large Healthcare Contractor, Kitchell Contractors, where he was involved in several high-profile hospital projects, including the largest water intrusion/remediation healthcare project in the country at the time.  This is where his passion for working on the building envelope, particularly roofing and waterproofing, launched.  During his time at Kitchell, he also completed his Master's of Science in Structural Engineering from Norwich University.  He spent several years moving to different projects and eventually ended up in Hawaii working with DRI Companies, one of the largest roofing contractors in the country, on a high-profile solar PV project for the Navy at Pearl Harbor, the largest solar project in Hawaii at the time.

After a tenure of several years working in the construction industry, Jonathan followed his passion for engineering and consulting work within the Building Envelope industry by joining a leading Architectural Engineering
Firm in Hawaii, with a focus on construction management of critical building envelope rehabilitation and renovation projects. From there he continued his professional accreditation by obtaining his Professional Engineer license in California, his General Contractor's license in Hawaii, and his Certified Solar Roofing Professional Certification.

Eventually, the desire to be actively involved in the construction of projects took hold and Jonathan ventured out on his own to start Pono Consulting Group, with the goal of using his experience in both the contracting and consulting/engineering professions to bridge a gap he saw in the construction industry between design and construction.  Along with his goal of wanting to bring a new approach to how construction projects go from start to finish, he also followed his passion for the Building Envelope industry and helping clients build lasting solutions for keeping their buildings dry and performing their best, he pursued additional accreditations from the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants and eventually obtained his Registered Building Enclosure Consultant, the first one in the state of Hawaii.  Now his passion for building better buildings and helping clients develop lasting solutions within the constraints of their budgets is the core of Pono Consulting Group.
